Healthy Aging


It should come as no surprise that we live in an aging community. September is Healthy Aging month and rather than worry about another wrinkle or commiserate over that extra candle on our cake, this is the perfect opportunity to embrace life and make positive changes.

I believe the old adage is true “you are only as old as you feel”, so work to feel younger this fall. The advice is really the same as it is any time in our lives, follow a few simple rules and you will be able to enjoy a healthy life at any age.

  1. Eat Healthy – not only will you feel better, you will also reduce the risk of developing chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and heart disease.
  2. Stay safe – as we age, our risk of injury increases and our ability to recover unfortunately diminishes. Take extra precautions to prevent falls and other accidents to avoid long term damage and extend your ability to enjoy life to its fullest.
  3. Stay active – physical activity significantly contributes to healthy aging and has been shown to increase both your quality of life as well as extending it. If you don’t exercise currently, it is never too late to start. Take this opportunity to get out there and enjoy the beautiful weather.
  4. Stay connected – having social supports will enhance both your mental and physical well-being and of course just make life more fun. So take advantage of groups, clubs and activities in your community or better yet, start one of your own.

Remember with age come many advantages which are easy to lose sight off as we count the candles. Take care of yourself and embrace your age with pride.
