With one holiday season coming to an end, many of us are setting our sights on a different type of holiday – the winter getaway.
Whether heading to Florida for the winter or booking a week in Cuba, Canadians have long sought warmer climes to break the dreariness of this long and cold season. Before heading out, remember a few things to make your trip memorable for all the right reasons.
- Know your destination – are there travel advisories including recommended vaccinations against hepatitis or yellow fever or suggested preventative medications for gastrointestinal illnesses?
- Consider that while the flu is never fun, it is guaranteed to spoil your vacation so get your shot before you go.
- If you are not covered by an employee benefit plan, make sure to purchase travel insurance even if you are young and healthy. Medical evacuations after an accident or illness alone can cost well in excess of $50,000 – so protect yourself.
- Make sure you bring both prescription and over the counter medications you will need during your trip and carry a detailed list of all your medications in case they are lost or stolen.
After all, while visiting a Mexican hospital may make for a story to share for years to come, with a little planning, you can recount your happy holiday memories instead.
